On Finding Happiness in Unhappy Situations

Minggu, Maret 20, 2022

The United Nations has declared March 20 as the annual International Day of Happiness, recognizing the importance of happiness and well-being as common aims and aspirations in the lives of people worldwide. In 2015, the UN created 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with the aim of reducing poverty, inequality, and protecting the environment, all three of the crucial components leading to happiness and well-being.

Build Back Happier’ is the theme of 2022 International Day of Happiness. It revolves around the global recovery from the pandemic of Covid-19. The economies have taken a huge jab, and people are separated not only by lockdowns and restrictions, but also death. Sadness, anger, and loneliness has replaced the delightful days.

Can you remember what you truly need to be happy in life? Because you can have all of the material things in the world’s happiest or wealthiest country and yet... be unhappy. Yes, some may prefer to have a meltdown in a dry bathroom on a three-bedroom apartment with a closet full of luxurious brands and a bank accounts that could feed the homeless in a whole city for weeks.

This bring us to the realization that material things are a mere illusory of happiness. It brings us pleasure. A false god.

Looking deep into our own life, we are obsessed with the idea of finding happiness in accomplishments and pleasures, in labels and titles, in beautiful home, in social status, a perfect partner or offsprings. Anything insta-worthy. Hence, we often overlook the reality that happiness comes from inside and not dependent.

Happiness is a state of well-being and contentment. It is something that we choose for ourselves and a way to live our life according to our being. It is how we dance around to our own beat and not to someone else’s rhythm.

But finding happiness while there are many critical situations in the world right now feels like a sin.

Focusing on happiness is becoming increasingly difficult when there’s a war going on, when there’s millions of people don’t have access to clean water, when things don’t go well with your loved ones, when you just lost your job, when you have worries floating in your mind. That is the real challenge. And that’s reality.

Shit happens.

Things will go south. People will disappoint us. We will questioned and lost hope in humanity. Negativities are a part of our life. And that is fine.

I’m not here to spread the toxic positivity. Heck, I’m a depressed bipolar. I embrace my unhappiness, and I believe everyone should too, in an acceptable and healthy manner.

For a few years now, I have lived with the ideology that happiness is a journey of discovering yourself. And the journey involved a lot of struggles and failures. It’s filled with unpleasant things, yet it brought me joy and got my eyes all teary when I reminisce it. It’s the process of overcoming all odds and not giving up on myself even though I knew all too well how cruel the society could be.

So, today, on the International Day of Happiness, let’s make it a day to remind and allow ourself to be happy and hopeful just the way it is. Aim high. Raise your expectations on yourself and savor the inevitable failure. Learn from it. Create a to-do list a mile long, embrace the infinite opportunity granted to you. Live it.
